McDowell Grove Co Forest Preserve, Illinois

Small bit of rural beauty in Naperville, Illinois. Lots of wild flowers.

Take a walk here! You’ll be glad you did.

Tall Phlox

I have two tall phlox plants in my back garden. This year, for some reason, my white phlox came up but did not bloom.  The purple phlox however are full and colorful with a delicate scent. They are very tall, at least five feet.

Historic Kingston, NY

Established in 1652 as the third settlement in the Dutch colony of New Netherland, an active participant in the American Revolution, and a major river-port during New York’s 19th-century canal and steamboat era, Kingston boasts a history that spans over 300 years. Kingston was the first capital of New York State.

Each house has charming details such as shuttered windows and lamp lit doorways.

A New Project with Strips & Squares

This is a new project, a new quilt in the works. It is the perfect project to use those strips & squares from my bins. Each color takes just one 2 1/2 inch wide strip. Between the colors are 2 1/2 inch white on white squares. I’m using lots of fabrics from the bottom of my stash pile; fabrics that have been waiting along time to come out and be used. The quilt is assembled in rows. I do three rows at a time, join those & then join them to the main quilt. Because I have so many strips & square already cut, the quilt is going together quickly.

Strips & Squares

Many quilt patterns call for strips & squares, especially the 2 1/2 inch size. I have learned to cut & keep these sizes handy. There are times I want to begin a new project but cannot decide which one. So I begin cutting strips from my stash and my thoughts come into focus. The ready cut strips & squares safe time, especially when I want to make a quick gift, like place mats.

This also helps keep my sewing room neat because it organizes those little pieces of assorted colors left over form past projects.

I have other sizes as well but seem to use the 2 1/2 inch sizes the most.

I keep them in inexpensive clear bins which makes it easy to see the colors.

The Tetons, Wyoming

I took these photos of the Tetons while rafting on the Snake River in September 2012. It is amazingly beautiful.
